We’ve received an award for being a carer friendly school!
The Carer Friendly School accreditation is awarded to schools in Newcastle by local charity Newcastle Carers in recognition and celebration of their efforts to support young carers.
1 in 12 young people has caring responsibilities.
Young carers take on physical, emotional or practical responsibilities at home because someone in their family is ill, has a disability, experiences mental health problems, or has an addiction. Young people want to help and feel proud that they can offer support, but for many young carers having extra responsibilities can be difficult and impact their life at home, school, or college.
Newcastle Carers’ Carer Friendly School Accreditation celebrates the positive steps schools have taken to support young carers in education. Bridgewater has made three pledges as part of the accreditation to help identify and support young people in our school who have a caring role. Our pledges are:
1. We will display information about young carers on our website.
2. We will regularly send out information about young carers to self identify.
3. We will be alert to potential young carers in school and discuss this with their families.
By making these pledges, we have demonstrated that we are committed to supporting young carers. We are proud to be a carer friendly school.
