Personal Development

At Bridgewater, we strongly promote and support every child’s personal development. We believe that key to this is knowing each child as an individual; developing positive relationships is at the heart of what we do.

We have embraced ‘Thrive’ as a philosophy to understand children’s emotional needs and barriers in order to best support them. Children are on an important journey to understanding themselves and relating to others. As succinctly put by Laurence D. Steinberg, ‘Self-regulation is a better indicator of success than intelligence.’ From the very start, we support children to understand, name, talk about and ultimately manage their emotions. We use ‘Zones of Regulation’ as a tool to support this and to help children to understand the emotions of others too.

Also supporting the whole school commitment to building resilience and character in our children, we use ‘Commando Joes’ to support individuality and each child’s journey to thrive. This is all underpinned by a progressive PSE and RHE curriculum that makes links with organisations and charities that support children’s mental health, wellbeing and personal development.
