Oracy

At Bridgewater we work with Voice21 to develop and teach our children oracy skills. Speaking and listening is built into the curriculum, teaching and learning and wider school life. Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language and listening. Oracy is inclusive and the skills they develop set them up for success in school and life. It is a powerful tool for learning; by teaching children to become more effective speakers and listeners we empower them to better understand themselves, each other and the world around them. It enables them to find their voice to succeed school and life.

You will hear students solving problems collaboratively in maths and dissecting arguments in history, talking through conflicts in the playground and contributing to assemblies. Like reading, writing and maths, children can learn oracy skills and they are vital to every aspect of school, work and creating healthy relationships with other people. Through a high quality oracy education students learn through talk and to talk. This is when they develop and deepen their subject knowledge and understanding through talk in the classroom, which has been planned, designed, modelled, scaffolded and structured to enable them to learn the skills needed to talk effectively.
